Basic 8" Round or Square Chocolate Cake Recipe

We have been asked by a few customers to upload a recipe for a Simple Chocolate Cake. We hope you enjoy.



  1. Preheat oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Grease and line two 8 inch round tins.
  2. Place all ingredients; except the boiling water, into a large mixing bowl. Using a wooden spoon or electric whisk, beat the mixture until smooth and well combined.
  3. Add the boiling water to the mixture a little at a time, until smooth. Divide the cake batter between the sandwich tins and bake in the oven for 25 – 35 minutes, or until the top is firm to the touch, and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.
  4. Remove the cakes from the oven and allow too cool completely, still in their tins to keep the shape.

Covering the cake with the chocolate topping…………



  1. To make the chocolate icing, heat the chocolate and cream in a saucepan over a low heat until the chocolate melts. Remove the pan from the heat and whisk the mixture until smooth, glossy and thickened. Set aside to cool for 1-2 hours or until thick enough to spread oven the cake.
  2. When you are ready to cover your cake, take one half and spread the chocolate icing over the top making sure is it spread evenly.
  3. Place the second half of the cake on top, ensuring the flattest side of the cake is facing up.
  4. Cover the whole cake with the chocolate icing, including all sides and top.
  5. Ensure the chocolate icing is as smooth and even as possible, as this will make the appearance of the cake look better when the fondant icing is applied. You can do this by using a PME plastic or stainless steel scrapper.
  6. Once the cake is as smooth as possible, put it in the fridge to set.
